Flingo
Traditional language learning apps often lack emotional engagement and cultural context, making the learning experience feel repetitive and disconnected.
Flingo uses music lyrics as an immersive tool to help users learn a new language in a fun, engaging, and emotionally resonant way.
Design Outcome
Designed to be motivating and emotionally engaging, the app leverages music to enhance memory, improve mood, and strengthen connections to the language and culture. By meeting users where they are—listening to music— Flingo enables a sustainable and enjoyable learning habit.
The app is inspired by Spotify's familiar interface, enabling users to learn vocabulary while enjoying music. A clean, minimal interface makes navigation effortless and reduces cognitive load.
The Process
How it started
As someone who moved abroad, I've often been surrounded by people learning new languages. One phrase I kept hearing was: "Yeah, I started Duolingo, but I didn't stick with it." That stuck with me — and made me curious about how people truly immerse themselves in a new culture and language.
Through research and user interviews, a clear pattern appeared: music and movies play a powerful role in language learning. And that deeply resonated with me, because that's exactly how I learned English. Why? Because they're fun, emotionally engaging, and culturally rich. They spark a connection — not just with the language, but with the people who speak it. You start conversations, share lyrics, and laugh about movies. Learning becomes natural, social, and memorable.
The Problem
Traditional apps often rely on rote memorization and translation-heavy methods, which feel repetitive and disconnected.
Users struggle to stay motivated when learning feels like a chore rather than a natural part of daily life.
Current apps rarely reflect how people speak in honest conversations or cultural settings.
User research revealed a strong preference for music and movies as tools for language learning.

Sketching out the idea
Mid-fidelity Wireframes
I created mid-fidelity wireframes that emphasized layout, content hierarchy, and crucial functionalities to establish a precise structure in the user journey.
I gathered early feedback on usability to understand if the core experience effectively addressed user needs before moving on to the high-fidelity design phase.

What I Learned
This was my first CareerFoundry project, where I gained hands-on experience conducting competitive analyses, user interviews, and usability testing. It was also my first time designing hi-fidelity wireframes. This project significantly strengthened my research and design skills, and deepened my understanding of creating user-centered digital products.
